Benbatl, Godolphin dominate in Dubai
2018 Cox Plate runner-up Benbatl is on target to win the Dubai Turf for the second time after an easy victory at Meydan on Thursday.
Godolphin flexed its muscle on the second night of the Dubai World Cup Carnival by winning four of the five turf races, highlighted by Benbatl ($1.12 favourite) trouncing his four rivals in the Group 2 Singspiel Stakes (1800m) by 4.75 lengths under Christophe Soumillon.
The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Benbatl, a three-time Group 1 winner, won the same race in 2018 before winning the G1 Dubai Turf (1800m) on World Cup night two months later.
There was little depth to this year’s Singspiel Stakes with Benbatl’s stablemate Dream Castle, who appeared the only danger after a disappointing Melbourne spring carnival campaign, scratched on raceday.
Benbatl was resuming after finishing last in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (1609m) when not handling the very heavy conditions at Ascot in October.
