Like a Boss, stars Haddish and Byrne as two longtime best friends who run their own cosmetics company. But when they find themselves thousands of dollars in debt, they decide to take the offer of Claire Luna (Salma Hayek), a beauty industry titan who offers to buy them out. However, in classic big business fashion, the two friends learn that Luna’s plans are more sinister than they’d reckoned with, and their fight to stop Big Beauty from stealing their ideas quickly turns ugly.
The trailer focuses on Mel and Mia going to war with Claire when the cosmetics industry giant puts their friendship in jeopardy (after purchasing their company for a million-dollar sum). Tonally, Like a Boss seems to hew closest to Arteta’s previous efforts on Cedar Rapids and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, in the way that it combines zany comedy with a more heartfelt relationship story. Byrne and Haddish are both comfortably in their wheelhouse here, having previously starred in comedy hits like Bridemaids, Neighbors 1 & 2, and Girls Trip. Haddish, in particular, has continued to specialize in entertainment that highlights female friendships (like Netflix’s recently-canceled Tuca & Bertie) since she broke out, and it’s good to see that will continue with Like a Boss.
Paramount has now released the Like a Boss trailer online, ahead of its premiere in theaters over the weeks ahead.
